What we do
Meridian is Canberra’s leading community-controlled organisation taking action to prevent HIV, improve the health and wellbeing of people impacted by HIV and LGBTIQA+ people, and create safe and inclusive communities.
Meridian increases access to HIV and STI prevention, testing, and treatment. It conducts targeted health promotion activities, runs community events, and provides peer-led support services and activities for people living and at risk of with HIV and our communities to support them to look after their sexual health.
Meridian works to improve the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ people. From Rainbow Families dance parties and Encampment to service navigation and aged care programs, Meridian supports LGBTIQA+ people across their lifespans. Meridian’s Wellbeing Services provide high-quality, person-centred counselling and mental health supports. Additionally, Meridian provides education and training to increase understanding across the ACT about LGBTIQA+ communities and their health needs.
Meridian’s Sex Workers Outreach Program (SWOP) aims to prevent HIV and other STIs among Canberra’s sex work community, promote sex work as a valid occupation, and empower and support sex workers.
Meridian works with the community to celebrate and nurture their rich diversity and to strengthen their collective resilience against the adverse effects of stigma and discrimination and the impacts of minority stress.

Meridian recognises the need to develop a structured and holistic approach for strengthening our work and relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, especially those who may be impacted by HIV or at risk of HIV. Meridian acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and Elders both past and present.
By developing a Reconciliation Action Plan, we hope to clearly identify actions and realistic targets detailing steps and priorities that advise on the rights, health and dignity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are impacted by HIV or at risk of HIV.
