Demonstrate your commitment to LGBTI-friendly aged care and improve your person-centred practices for rainbow seniors.

About this module
This course helps aged care workers, allied health workers and others working with seniors to understand and celebrate the diversity of bodies, genders, sexualities and relationships of older LGBTI people. It will also support your organisation to meet its obligations under the new rights-based Aged Care Act 2024 and strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.
Meridian is the only Canberra region provider of Silver Rainbow training, which was developed by LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA).
Silver Rainbow training can also support your organisation to achieve LGBTI Specialisation Verification as set out in the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing Specialisation Verification Framework.
Our training sessions can accommodate up to 25 participants.
Fees will depend on the nature of your organisation and whether you are booking multiple sessions. Contact us to discuss what fees will be applicable to your organisation.

Why this training is important
Heterosexuality is deeply embedded in aged care, shaping the environment, activities and assumptions about relationships. Sadly, many older LGBTI+ people living in aged care experience prejudice, exclusion, invisibility and a lack of respect. They often feel forced back ‘into the closet’ to stay avoid ostracism and discrimination, or avoid using aged care services altogether.
Older LGBTI people seek providers that ensure inclusive, respectful care that affirms their identity, with many even moving cities in preparation for transitioning to aged care.
Rainbow elders are not seeking special treatment; they just want to be seen and accepted for who they are.
How this training will help your organisation
Meeting new legislative requirements
The new Aged Care Act 2024 introduced a Statement of Rights, including that older people receiving care have the right to:
- feel safe and respected
- have their culture and identity valued
- stay connected with their community.
Silver Rainbow training can help aged care providers meet their legal obligations under the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, specifically:
- Outcome 1.1: Person-centred care
- Outcome 1.2: Dignity, respect and privacy
- Outcome 2.2a: Quality, safety and inclusion culture to support aged care workers to deliver quality care
- Outcome 2.2b: Quality, safety and inclusion culture to support individuals
- Outcome 3.2: Delivery of funded aged care services
- Outcome 7.1: Daily living.
Gaining specialisation verification
Check out LHA’s Checklist: LGBTI Inclusion Training in Aged Care (part of its Specialisation Verification toolkit) for information on how Silver Rainbow training can help you meet the requirements for the Australian Government’s LGBTI Specialisation Verification.
Meridian can also support aged care providers to achieve this specialisation verification, such as providing advice on holding awareness events or conducting inclusivity policy reviews.
Pricing will be determined based on what supports you require.
