Calling on Canberra’s LGBTIQA+ community: Have your voice heard on our health and wellbeing
Meridian calls on ACT LGBTIQA+ adults to lend their voices to Private Lives 4, the latest iteration of Australia’s longest-running national survey of LGBTIQA+ health and wellbeing.
Canberra GBQ+ Community Periodic Survey 2025
The Canberra GBQ+ Community Periodic Survey is a cross-sectional survey of gay, bisexual and queer (GBQ+) men and non-binary people who recruited from a range of LGBTQ+ venues and events in Canberra and online throughout the Australian Capital Territory. The Canberra survey was conducted in October and November 2025. The major aim of the survey is to provide data on sexual practices, drug use, testing practices, and prevention methods related to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) among GBQ+ men and non-binary people. Since 2000, the survey has been funded by ACT Health and Community Services Directorate (formerly ACT Health) and recruitment facilitated by Meridian. The Centre for Social Research in Health coordinates the survey nationally, with support from the Kirby Institute.
LGBTIQA+ Inclusive Mental Health Professionals - 2026
This directory serves as a general guide to LGBTIQA+ inclusive mental health practitioners in Canberra, surrounding areas, and online. Listings have been compiled from publicly available information and, where applicable, with the consent of practitioners who have expressed an interest in supporting LGBTIQA+ communities.
Practitioners may differ in qualifications, funding options, and therapeutic approaches. While every effort has been made to include providers who demonstrate inclusive practice and cultural competence, inclusion in this list does not constitute formal endorsement, accreditation, or recommendation by Meridian.
Quick, free and private HIV self-tests now available 24/7 at Meridian
People in the Canberra region can now access free HIV self-test kits at any time through a CONNECT project vending machine outside Meridian’s offices in Turner.
“At Meridian’s core is the mission to end HIV transmission and serve people living with HIV until there is a cure for everyone,” said Meridian CEO Joshua Anlezark.
“We know that stigma remains a significant barrier to sexual health testing, especially for people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. However, it is important to know your status and know it early, so you can access appropriate care and maximise your health outcomes.
“We are proud to be the first location in the ACT to have a CONNECT vending machine, with the goal to increase testing rates and reduce HIV transmission.
This initiative is in collaboration with the CONNECT project by Thorne Harbour Health.
Getting a self-test kit to use in the privacy of your own home is easy:
- Go to https://hivconnect.org.au/ and click on ‘Get a Test Kit’.
- Answer a few questions, including providing your mobile phone number.
- Scan the QR code or enter the code you received through SMS to get your free test.
is straightforward and there is a detailed instructional video on the CONNECT website. Results are available within 15 minutes.
To support the roll-out of the vending machine, Meridian is holding free training sessions for community workers and allied health professionals in the Canberra region. These sessions will build awareness and confidence across the sector, both in understanding HIV and in practically supporting clients to access the CONNECT vending machine and self-test kits (with in-person and online sessions).
“Whatever HIV means for Canberrans living with HIV, Meridian will be there when they need it for information, connection, services and advocacy,” Mr Anlezark said.
“In partnership with Canberra Sexual Health Centre, Meridian delivers monthly free sexual health screening and access to PrEP. Meridian also provides free and low-cost safer sex products.”
Step onto the dance floor and into a space of joy, connection and celebration.
Meridian invites LGBTIQ+ community members, especially our rainbow elders and their allies, to join them for an afternoon dance on 18 April at Ainslie Arts Centre.

Impacts of Religious Discrimination of LGBTIQ+ People
Religion-based discrimination of LGBTIQ+ people can take many forms. It may involve conversion programs and religious ‘counselling’ practices (i.e. practices that try to change the sexuality or gender identity of LGBTIQ+ people). Unfortunately, these practices still exist in Australia despite extensive evidence about their life-threatening harms (Ryan, 2009).
Does the ACT need an LGBTIQA+ peak body? - Discussion Paper
In the ACT, there is no peak body representing LGBTIQA+ people or organisations providing services to LGBTIQA+ people. The question of whether the ACT needs a peak body for LGBTIQA+ health and wellbeing is one that arises from time to time, including within the Office of LGBTIQ+ Affairs, in the ACT Health Scoping Study, in the commissioning process for peak bodies, and by individual stakeholders. This discussion paper outlines the arguments for and against establishing an LGBTIQA+ peak body in the ACT, and presents some alternative options to establishing a new, separate organisation.
Annual Report (2022)
The health, safety, and wellbeing of our communities remain at the heart of our work at Meridian. While Canberra was relatively sheltered from COVID-19 early on, we were hit hard by the pandemic in the first half of this financial year. In response, we rallied to support our communities, working hard to ensure they had access to appropriate health information and resources, COVID-19 vaccinations, and mental health support. We also made sure that our communities could meet their ongoing healthcare needs, including having access to HIV testing facilities, HIV medication, and harm-reduction resources and support.

TOPIA was new, experimental and fun, however we look forward to hosting Fair Day – Pride in the Park at Glebe Park in 2022.

Annual Report (2012)
We now have reasonable optimism that the end of HIV in Australia is possible in the medium term and that AIDS can be completely eliminated. Our hope comes from a raft of new evidence that supports treatment as prevention, opportunities afforded by new HIV testing technology and the huge improvements in the lives of most of those that have access to the latest medications. Whilst these advances are real, their potential will not be realised without governments political will, community support and a renewed sense of partnership.
