Private Lives 4 is Australia’s national survey of LGBTIQA+ adults’ health and wellbeing. It is an opportunity for LGBTIQA+ people aged 18+ to share their experiences and help build the evidence needed for better policy, services, advocacy and community support.
The more people who take part, the stronger the evidence will be. Every response helps build a clearer picture of LGBTIQA+ health and wellbeing in Australia and strengthens the case for change.
About Private Lives
Private Lives has been documenting the health, wellbeing and lived experiences of LGBTIQA+ people in Australia for more than 20 years. The findings from previous surveys have helped governments, services, researchers and community organisations better understand the needs, strengths and priorities of LGBTIQA+ communities.
Private Lives 4 is especially important because many LGBTIQA+ people are still not properly counted in mainstream health and social data. Without strong, community-led evidence, it is harder to show where inequities exist, where services need to improve, and what kinds of support communities need.
What the survey asks about
Private Lives 4 asks about a broad range of topics, including:
- health and wellbeing
- mental health
- healthcare access and experiences
- community connection
- safety and discrimination
- relationships and family
- housing, employment and financial stress
- alcohol, tobacco and other drug use
- ageing
- experiences across different parts of Australia.
How the results will be used
The results will be used to produce national reports, community resources, policy briefings, academic publications and tailored evidence for governments, services and LGBTIQA+ organisations.
This evidence will support the implementation of the National Action Plan for the Health and Wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ People 2025–2035 and help advocate for more inclusive, responsive and culturally safe services.
